Child Abuse and Gender Violence

The first voices denouncing the existence of a phenomenon of domestic violence were released into the public through the media in 1983. According to preliminary statistics from the Ministry of Interior in 1984 were presented in Spanish police stations 16,070 complaints of abuse, but studies conducted by the Ministry showed that this accounted for only approximately between 5 and 10 % of cases that occurred in the circumstances of social masking that characterize this type of violence. Legislative change operated by the Organic Law 1 / 2004 forced to differentiate not only at the policy level, but also statistical concepts of gender violence and domestic violence is not gender, so data for 2006 can be considered the first to differentiate with a minimum of rigor both cases. However, the level of complaints is still away from the actual level of violence. According to the macro-performed in 2006 by the Institute, 9.6% of women experience some form of abuse, being Castilla La Mancha autonomous community with the highest percentage (11.50%), while La Rioja presents the lowest (7.3%).

The Attorney General, in his Report of 2006, also includes numerous statistics that reveal the problem situation in the Spanish courts. Among these is revealed as more and more commonly found cases of abuse of immigrant women by their partners, concurring in many cases a special situation of helplessness because of the irregular situation in which they are located. The Ombudsman's report describes 2006 of \ "frustrating \" data regarding expectations for combating violence against women that were with the entry into force of Organic Law 1 / 2004. In that year were 69 people killed in domestic violence, compared to 61 in 2005, representing an increase of 13.11%. 70.59% of these were of Spanish nationality and 29.41% came from abroad. With respect to the murderous aggressors, the Spanish were 76.81%, compared to 23.19% of foreigners. 66.7% of the perpetrators were arrested after committing the crime and escaped 1.45%. Of the remainder, 21.74% is 10.10% suicide and tried. According to the Inspection Service report on the activity of the courts on domestic violence of the Supreme Judicial Council, in the second quarter of 2007 there were 31,789 complaints: 11.5% correspond to the victim, 0.3 % were made by their families, the police 78.20%, 9.3% for medical services and 0.7% for third-party support services.

There were 3228 withdrawals from the process, which is one of ten.

Despite all the advances that have been made, information campaigns and increased complaints, most institutions that conduct research on this issue believe that we are still to \ "tip of the iceberg \". The truth is that this violence does not stop and that November 30, 2007 the number of women killed by their partners is 70.
