The Prague Astronomical Clock

In the southern wall of Old City Hall of Prague we find the Astronomical Clock, built in medieval times and more than 600 years of operation, continues the time with Swiss precision. Astronomical clock is the world's oldest and still functioning thanks to a watchmaker has always been skilful in the care of their mechanisms, Otakar Zámecník is already the sixteenth watchmaker responsible for keeping it going.

The clock had to be repaired in importance in 1865 and 1945, the latter after a bombing at the end of the Second World War, but after these major repairs we can say that 75% of the component parts are original fifteenth-century , which speaks to the skill of the watchmakers who built it.

Every hour, between 9 am and 9 pm in the Old Town Clock in Prague apostles parade and four additional figures: the Turk, Greed, Vanity and Death, represented the latter by a skeleton pulling the rope marks the beginning of the parade. The first apostle is San Pedro with a golden key and the last St. Paul with a sword and a book.

Although the most original astronomical clock in Prague is complicated astronomical sphere, indicating the position and motion of celestial bodies in relation to Prague. It is also the world's only capable of measuring the Babylonian hours, according to this schedule, the Babylonian days covering the period of time ranging from sunrise to the setting sun Which makes Babylonian summer time is shorter than in winter. The Prague Astronomical Clock knows how to measure these variations.

A visit is recommended to climb the clock tower, from where wonderful views of the old city of Prague. Tower Hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 to 18:00 and Monday 11:00 to 18:00 hours.
